Ferrari sign Vettel and release Alonso

Ferrari finally confirmed their contract with Sebastian Vettel and the impending release of Fernando Alonso yesterday. Alonso, who is linked with a move to McLaren next season, said: “I had a very close relationship with

[former Ferrari] president [Luca] di Montezemolo. We talked every week and we more or less agreed that if this year we were not competitive we could think of different options.”

McCaw reaches his century as captain

New Zealand’s revered captain Richie McCaw will lead his side out for the 100th time against Wales tomorrow. McCaw first led the team against Wales in Cardiff in 2004 and he reflected on his spell. “When I started I felt like I needed to have all the answers, to know it all myself, always be the guy talking. But as time goes on you become more comfortable if someone else has the answer and you go with that,” he said.

Bronze relishing Wembley contest

England’s talented centre-back Lucy Bronze is relishing Sunday’s game with Germany at Wembley. It will be the first time she has played at the stadium. “I grew up in Holy Island [Northumberland, where her grandmother was caretaker of Lindisfarne Castle], which was a long way from Wembley. I’ve been for meetings and awards, but not for a game. It’ll be a completely new experience,” she said.

World’s tallest player signs for Cheshire

The world’s tallest basketball player, Paul Sturgess, has signed for British Basketball League team Cheshire Phoenix.

The 26-year-old, who is 7ft 8in, enjoyed a two-year spell with the Harlem Globetrotters exhibition team, gaining the nickname ‘Tiny’. He wears size 20 boots.

“I have been enjoying my time back in England and the chance to play in the BBL whilst I am here is something I will relish,” Sturgess enthused.

“I am excited to join my new team-mates and hope to fulfil whatever role is given to me.”

He is the second tallest living Englishman, just behind Neil Fingleton, an actor and former basketball player.

Collin seals cup win for Maidstone

Maidstone United reached the FA Cup second round last night, after Frannie Collin’s late header ensured the non-league side beat League Two Stevenage 2-1 in their first-round replay. Collin struck an early opener and, after Darius Charles levelled, the striker scored his second late on.
