Suarez’s World Cup doubt after surgery

Luis Suarez’s participation in the World Cup remains in doubt after the forward underwent knee surgery yesterday. The Uruguay FA issued a pessimistic statement over the Liverpool player’s chances of returning in time to face England in Sao Paulo on 19 June.

Rooney eager to impress at last

Wayne Rooney is confident of enjoying more success at next month’s World Cup than he has in previous international tournaments. “They haven’t gone great for me,” he admitted. “But I’m hoping this one will. I feel fresh, fit [and] ready, so there will be no excuses if it doesn’t.”

Jordan stars in England victory

Chris Jordan inspired England to a commanding victory over Sri Lanka in the rain-affected opening ODI at The Kia Oval last night. His unbeaten 38 off just 13 balls preceded three wickets as England (247 for 6 off 39 overs) beat the visitors (144 all out) by 81 runs under the D/L method.

Vincent and Arif charged by ECB

The ECB last night charged two former players with match-fixing. Lou Vincent, of New Zealand, and bowler Naveed Arif have both been charged with offences relating to Sussex matches. Both have been provisionally suspended and face life bans if found guilty.

Lennon departs as Adams stays on

Neil Lennon departed Celtic as manager yesterday after just over four years in charge – winning three Scottish titles and two Scottish Cups. However, he will not be taking over at Norwich, who have appointed Neil Adams on a permanent basis.

Ferrari: Alonso’s the best – and ours

Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo moved quickly yesterday to quash reports of a rift with Fernando Alonso. “[He] is the best in the world,” the Italian said. “He knows how much I count on him, in terms of contribution and the impetus he gives.”

Louw return gives Bath a final boost

Francois Louw returns for Bath tonight after recovering from an ankle injury suffered in March. The flanker goes straight into the side for the Amlin Challenge Cup final against Northampton. “He’s pretty desperate to get out there,” coach Mike Ford said.

McIlroy tries to ease the pain

Rory McIlroy made a strong finish as he recorded 68 in his first round at the PGA Championship, days after breaking up with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki. “At times it was difficult,” he said. “I always knew it would be. I’m just trying to put my head into my golf.”
