Chelsea fans set for summer hearing

A police application for banning orders on five Chelsea fans will be given a full hearing on 15-16 July following yesterday’s preliminary hearing in London. All five will contest the orders being implemented for their suspected involvement in an incident where a black man was blocked from boarding a train in Paris. The orders would stop them travelling to games at home and abroad.

Moggi to appeal over lifetime ban

The former Juventus executive, Luciano Moggi, will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to overturn his lifetime ban from football. The 77-year-old Moggi and others had prison sentences thrown out on Tuesday by Italy’s highest criminal court, which ruled the statute of limitations expired in the nine-year-old match-fixing scandal, known as Calciopoli.

FA charges Labadie for alleged bite

Dagenham midfielder Joss Labadie has been charged with violent conduct by the FA after allegedly biting Stevenage defender Ronnie Henry’s hand during Dagenham’s 1-0 win on Saturday. The pair clashed near the touchline when Henry tried to wrestle the ball out of Labadie’s arms after play had been stopped. Henry appeared to tell the assistant referee he had been bitten.

Sunderland shock for champions

There was a major shock in the opening game of the FA Women’s Super League as champions Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to newly promoted Sunderland, Bethany Mead getting their opener.

Doper Gatlin is handed Nike deal

Sprinter Justin Gatlin has been given a new sponsorship deal by US sportswear giant Nike – despite serving two doping bans. Gatlin is among the favourites to win gold in the 100m and 200m at the World Championships in August. Marlon Devonish, who won 4x100m relay gold for Britain at the 2004 Olympics, said Gatlin’s deal is a “kick in the teeth to the 99 per cent of guys who are clean”.
