Arsenal hold the holders but go out

Arsenal departed the Champions League despite holding the holders Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena. Bastian Schweinsteiger’s opener was levelled by Lukas Podolski but Bayern held on to progress 3-1 on aggregate. Atletico Madrid beat Milan 5-1 on aggregate. MORE

Pardew hit with seven-game ban

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has been banned for seven matches following his head-butt on Hull midfielder David Meyler earlier this month. The 52-year-old has accepted the Football Association charge, after also being fined £60,000. MORE

Chris Powell was yesterday sacked by Charlton Athletic, with the club bottom of the Championship. The former England defender has been replaced by former Standard Liège manager Jose Riga, who has also worked with Milan. MORE

Etherington sets up medal Friday

Visually impaired skier Jade Etherington and guide Caroline Powell all but guaranteed a medal in the super combined in Sochi yesterday. The pair only need to finish Friday’s super-G segment to win a medal.
