Wasps set to move goalposts again

Wasps are expected to begin playing at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry after agreeing a deal with the local council to take out a 250-year lease on the 32,000 all-seater stadium. The Premiership club are also planning to build a training base at their new home, which is likely to be shared with Coventry City, the League One football club who only recently returned to the stadium after a financial dispute.

Bianchi ‘stable’ following collision

Marussia driver Jules Bianchi has been described as in a “critical but stable” condition following the horrific crash he suffered during Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. The Frenchman, who ploughed into a tractor amid monsoon conditions in Suzuka, suffered a diffuse axonal head injury, and doctors have warned they will have to wait before the full extent of the injury becomes clear.

Tired Torrance missed Ryder party

Europe vice-captain Sam Torrance was so knackered after helping retain the Ryder Cup that he slept through the victory party. “I went up to the room and said, ‘Give me 10 minutes’,” the Scot said. “I’m 61. I had done Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I was knackered. I slept for 12 hours. Missed the whole party, Rory [McIlroy] in the wig, everything.”

Blunder puts para-cycling ‘out’ of 2020

Cycling events could be left out of the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo after the sport’s governing body failed to submit its application on time.

The IPC says the UCI, cycling’s world governing body, only submitted its application last week. The deadline was 28 July.

The IPC board will meet in Abu Dhabi from 29 January to 1 February to make a final decision on the sports programme. Cycling will be among eight sports competing for a maximum of seven remaining places.

British rider Jody Cundy said: “How can we have faith in the UCI, when they can’t even submit an application to be in the Paralympics on time?”

Nadal ready to play through the pain

Rafael Nadal is still planning to compete at the Shanghai Masters today, when he takes on fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, despite requiring surgery on appendicitis. Nadal started to feel pain at the weekend but took antibiotics in order to remain at the competition.
