Tory MP faces fresh threat

Tory supporters in Reigate, Surrey, are making a fresh attempt to oust their MP, Sir George Gardiner, over his Euro-sceptic views.

Opponents of Sir George, who fought off an attempt to deselect him last year, are pressing for an extraordinary general meeting to pass a no confidence motion. Sir George, former chairman of the 92 Group of Thatcherite Tory MPs, is resisting the move. The party leadership will not welcome the threat to another Tory MP, after the deselection of Sir Nicholas Scott in Chelsea, so close to the election.
