A DENTIST and anaesthetist were arrested after a five-year-old girl died after having a tooth out. Karla Selley, of Leyland, Lancashire, collapsed as she came round from an anaesthetic at Towngate Dentist Surgery in the town in August.

Police said the dentist, Michael Lane, 41, of Bolton, and a 66-year-old anaesthetist of Preston, not named, were arrested at Leyland police station on Tuesday and bailed to return to the station on 8 December.

Karla had become hysterical at the sight of a needle and it was arranged for the extraction to be done under anaesthetic. But as she was being brought round she had breathing difficulties and collapsed. She was taken to hospital but pronounced dead after attempted resuscitation. A post- mortem examination show she died from asphyxiation.
