Animal tests rise

The number of scientific experiments carried out on animals rose slightly last year, after falling consistently for the previous 15 years. Home Office statistics show that genetic engineering of animals, and new rules to control the number of times one animal can be used, were responsible for the 1 per cent increase to 3.2 million procedures reported in 1991.
