Police hunting the person who seriously injured a policeman when a brick was thrown through his patrol car windscreen have charged eight men.

The men will appear before magistrates in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear today, charged with causing criminal damage with intent to endanger life.

Constable John Robinson, 37, suffered brain damage in the incident last Wednesday.
