A Manchester inquest recorded a verdict of misadventure on a baby who was born with alcohol poisoning and died after three months without leaving hospital. His parents, Elizabeth Thorne, 40, and Alan McKenzie, 39, both had heavy drinking habits, the inquest was told. The baby had foetal alcohol syndrome, which led to hole-in-the-heart, stunted growth and lung and brain problems.

The coroner, Leonard Gorodkin, said that the baby died after a hernia operation. He said: 'This little boy didn't have much chance.'
