Paul Condon, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, signalled qualified support for a trial of long side-handle batons, which are already used in the United States. Mr Condon said he did not believe the batons, which are opposed by the Home Office, would necessarily provide more protection. 'But if officers at street level feel they would make them safer then I would be willing to trial them.'
