THE BBC expects to start digital radio broadcasts in London next autumn, providing compact disc quality audio for car radios able to pick up the signal and for portable sets, writes Maggie Brown.

The move is designed to encourage the spread of new broadcasting technology and the manufacture and marketing of new low-cost receivers. The BBC hopes to extend the network service to cover most urban areas and motorways by 1998.
