Sewage pollution of the water off Britain's beaches improved last year, the National Rivers Authority said. Just under 80 per cent of 419 beaches tested by the water quality watchdog passed the European Union's basic standard for sewage bacteria in seawater in 1993 - nearly 1 per cent better than in 1992.
