The European Court of Justice has ruled that Britain's system of income support, which can leave single parents better off on the dole than working, does not breach European Community sex discrimination laws. The judges rejected appeals by Patricia Cresswell and Sonia Jackson, who claimed that Department of Social Security regulations made it financially impossible for them to work.
