Samantha Kendall, the anorexic whose identical twin sister, Michela, died of the slimming disease last month, was said to be stable in hospital last night after eating a small amount of food.

Ms Kendall, 26, of Birmingham, weighs less than five stone and last week her mother, Susie, appealed for help to save her life. The twins developed anorexia at the age of 14 after making a slimming pact. Ms Kendall was due to fly to New York over the weekend but was admitted to Solihull Hospital in the West Midlands, weakened by a chest infection.

A hospital spokeswoman said last night that Ms Kendall had eaten a little food and was being given fluids intravenously. The chest infection had improved.
