More than 40 birds died after they were caught in a mystery pollution spillage along eight miles of coast. The RSPCA said that more than 70 birds had been coated by the leak of industrial adhesive.

Staff were working desperately to save other birds, including grebes, razorbills, guillemots and sandpipers, in an area of Lancashire between St Anne's and Fleetwood, and further south at Formby. Brian Jeffries, an RSPCA inspector, said: 'The substance is very, very sticky and far worse than oil.'
