Some blood banks are in danger of running out of supplies because of a combination of Christmas, bad weather, winter ailments and the recession, according to Dr Harold Gunson, England's blood transfusion service director. The problem has been so bad in the North, with demand 15 per cent higher and a 13 per cent drop in donations, that there is a threat to non-emergency operations unless stock levels are increased.
