A young British tourist has been found dead on a beach while on holiday with friends on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

The body of Jamie Todd, 20, was found on Thursday morning on Son Matias beach near to the party resort of Magaluf. He had been missing since Tuesday.

Mr Todd, from Southampton, had flown to the island the day beforehand. He was tagged in a tweet from a friend saying the party were “En route to Gatwick”. Earlier he had retweeted a post which read: “Holiday packing starts now!”

The Foreign Office confirmed that a British national had died on the island, and it was reported that ban investigating judge is now probing the young man’s death. The cause has not yet been established.

Friends of Mr Todd, a keen Southampton football supporter and Hampshire cricket fan, paid tribute to him, describing him as friendly and popular.

Friend Blake Finney tweeted: “RIP Jamie. Something so tragic couldn't have happened to one of the nicest, most popular guys I've known. Way too young. Gonna miss you pal.”

Mr Finney, who was not on the trip to Magaluf, told the Evening Standard that he was “in shock” at news of his friend’s death.

He added: "He was everything you could ask for in a friend. When I first heard about the news I was just in disbelief because you don't expect something so cruel to happen to someone so great. He'll be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and my thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

Russell Carey, who was on the trip, posted: “Devastated doesn’t come close.”

Harrison Jeffrey tweeted: “RIP Jamie, genuinely the nicest man I have ever met - you will always be missed.”

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Majorca on June 18.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family during this difficult time."

Mr Todd is thought to be the third Briton to die this year near to Magaluf, where authorities have sought to clamp down on alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour by tourists.
