A letter from Charlotte Bronte to her publisher fetched pounds 66,000 - twice its estimate - at Sotheby's. The letter, sent from the Bronte home at Howarth on 24 August 1847, introduced the manuscript of her novel Jane Eyre to Smith & Elder. Letters from the Earl of Essex to Queen Elizabeth I failed to reach their reserve of pounds 400,000.
