Thousands of women may be having needless Caesarean section births. Professor Wendy Savage told the National Childbirth Trust conference that the rate should be about 8 per cent but is currently 13 per cent.

Singleton and Neath maternity hospitals, West Glamorgan, banned the use of birthing pools following concern over safety.
