On the 13th July 1991 the Independent published an article which referred to Ghassem Ahmed Qassem having been charged by detectives from Scotland Yard and indicating that he had escaped prosecution for kidnapping after the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled it was not in the public interest. It is now accepted that the report was inaccurate and that Mr Qassem had not been a party to, or charged with, any offence. The Independent apologises to Mr Qassem for the distress which this report caused to him and to his wife and family.
