Twenty grandmasters and more than 40 international masters are competing in the Lloyds Bank Masters chess tournament at the Cumberland Hotel, London. Nijboer, Sadler, Gurevich, Murshed and Hon share the lead on three wins each. At the world draughts championship in the Park Lane Hotel, three draws left the scores level after 23 games between Dr Marion Tinsley and the computer programme, Chinook.
