Child rapist dies in jail cell
A man jailed for life for raping a baby has been found dead in his prison cell, the Prison Service said yesterday, writes David Connett.
Staff at Exeter prison found 31-year-old Glyndwr Williams hanging from the bars in his single cell in the jail's segregation unit, a spokesman said. Williams was jailed for life at Exeter Crown Court three weeks ago. He was convicted for rape and grievous bodily harm of a 13-month-old girl whom he attacked after a drinking session.
Exeter prison said that Williams asked to go in to solitary confinement after suffering verbal abuse from other inmates. The prison authorities said an internal inquiry was under way.
Police said they were not treating the matter as suspicious.
