DETECTIVES are investigating a bizarre and apparently motiveless double murder of a former police officer and his wife who were stabbed to death in frenzied attacks, writes David Connett.

Scotland Yard said the body of May Murrells was found at her home in Hayes, west London, last Tuesday. She had been stabbed repeatedly. The body of her husband Ken, a former police constable, was found in a garage a few miles away the following day.

Detective Superintendent Bob Fenton, leading the inquiry, said the killer was almost certainly known to the couple. 'There was no robbery motive, nothing was taken and the house was not ransacked.

'There is definitely a connection. They both died in exactly the same way with multiple stab wounds and were both victims of a frenzied attack.'

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: 'It is unlikely Mr Murrells was murdered where he was found.'
