Two doormen are in hospital after a suspected acid attack at a nightclub.

Police were called to the White Hotel nightclub in Lower Broughton, Salford, at 3.35am on Sunday after what was believed to be acid was thrown at the doormen.

A man who had been ejected from the club earlier in the night had returned armed with a knife and unknown liquid, which he threw at the door staff, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.

The two men are receiving treatment for burns in hospital, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The man is described as white, in his late 20s, of average build and about 6ft, with short brown hair.

A bottle containing what is believed to be acid was found after a search of the area.

Detective Sergeant Pat Wood, from GMP's Salford borough, said: "This was a vicious and dangerous attack on men who were just trying to their job.

"Although their injuries aren't life-threatening, they are likely to have permanent skin damage and no doubt at the time of the attack they were thinking the worst.

"There were lots of people inside the nightclub or leaving who are likely to have seen something or the man himself being ejected from the toilets.

"Please contact us. Even if you think it might just be something small it could really help us catch who did this."
