Woman smashes ‘hundreds’ of bottles of alcohol in supermarket

Footage of incident shows woman silently picking bottles off shelves and throwing them onto shop floor

A woman has been arrested after throwing hundreds of bottles of alcohol on the floor and smashing them in an Aldi branch in Hertfordshire.

The woman was filmed by another shopper in the shop in Stevenage picking up bottles one by one in silence and hurling them onto the floor, which was already covered with shattered glass and various types of alcohol.

Footage from another angle showed she had cleared a shelf in the middle and was reaching for bottles on the top shelf to smash on the ground as well. The incident occurred on Wednesday, according to Hertfordshire Police.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Police were called at around 2.30pm on Wednesday 25 November to report an incident at the Aldi supermarket in Fairlands Way, Stevenage.

“It was reported that several bottles of alcohol had been thrown onto the floor and smashed.

“Officers attended and a woman was arrested. She was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries to her hands and is now in police custody.”

Television presenter Lee Clark, who witnessed the incident, told The Sun it was “extraordinary”. He said the woman remained silent during the entire act.

“She must have smashed well over 500 bottles. It was shocking and started getting incredibly dangerous," he said. 

Aldi said they were unable to comment on the incident.

In May, a woman was arrested in Surrey after she smashed bottles of wine in a Co-operative supermarket.

The incident in Lingfield took place after the woman was asked to follow the store’s one-way system, which was put in place as a coronavirus measure to stop the spread of the virus.
