Baby dies after alleged assault

A baby girl has died after allegedly being assaulted, police said today.

The two-month-old baby, from Shoebury, Essex, was taken to hospital in Southend with head injuries on 9 August.

She was later transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London where she died last Thursday.

A 23-year-old male from Southend was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and has been released on police bail until 10 November.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Police were contacted by the ambulance service about a two-month-old baby who was taken ill in Friars Street, Shoebury, on 9 August.

"She was taken to Southend General Hospital and later transferred to Great Ormond Street suffering from head injuries.

"She sadly died on August 13."
