A third person has been arrested in connection with the murder of Jordan Watson, police have said.

Cumbria Police said they were questioning a 16-year-old boy from Carlisle after he was arrested yesterday evening.

Watson’s body was found by a member of the public in Upperby Cemetery next to St John the Baptist church in Carlisle, Cumbria, on the morning of 16 June.

The 14-year-old died from wounds to the neck and head caused by a sharp implement in what police called a “savage and brutal attack”.

Earlier yesterday, police arrested a 19-year-old man from Carlisle in connection with the murder. An 18-year-old man was arrested and detained for questioning on Wednesday. Both are still in custody.

The cemetery reopened to the public yesterday after police finished carrying out their searches.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Slattery, who is leading the investigation, said on Tuesday: “Jordan has lost his life as a result of a savage and brutal attack which has shocked the officers working on the case.”

“For a child to die in these circumstances in Carlisle is appalling,” he said, adding that the offender or offenders had to be “apprehended”.

Watson was “the most loving and caring child that anyone could meet”, his family said in a statement.

“He had the best sense of humour. Jordan’s favourite expression was ‘YOLO’ – you only live once. Jordan lived by this motto; he had a strong personality and a love of the outdoors,” they said.

Police are still appealing for anyone with information to step forward.
