A woman has been charged with murder of a three-month-old baby girl in south London.

The 40 year-old suspect was arrested after the infant was found unresponsive at a home in Croydon shortly before midday on Saturday.

Police said she and the child were known to each other but did not name them or give further information about the address ”as reporting restrictions may be imposed by the court”.

The family of the baby girl have been informed about the death, which is being investigated by the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command.

A postmortem examination will take place “in due course”, the force added.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that officers were called to the residential address in Croydon at 11.57am.

Despite attempts to revive her, the baby girl was pronounced dead at hospital at 1.05pm.

“At this early stage, police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation,” the force said in a statement.

“The baby and the woman arrested were known to each other.”

The woman, from West Croydon, is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates Court on Monday.
