Father sentenced for murdering two children

A father who murdered two of his children in their bedrooms will be sentenced today.

Robert Thomson, 50, knifed his children, Michelle, 25, and Ryan, seven, a total of 26 times on 3 May this year.

He then turned the knife on himself, attempting to cut his wrists and stab himself in the chest.

His estranged wife, June Thomson, found the bloodstained bodies of her children at the former family home in Buckhaven, Leven, in Fife.

Thomson now faces life behind bars after admitting two charges of murder.

The court heard that since March this year, he had reacted badly to the break-up of his marriage.

Judge Lord Menzies, who will today consider the minimum length of time Thomson must spend in jail, previously branded the crime "indescribably awful".

The case will call at the High Court in Edinburgh today.
