A police officer who was being investigated over fraud allegations has been found dead, police said today.

The body of Sergeant Simon Jenkinson, 31, was found after police were called to an address in Meanwood area of Leeds yesterday.

West Yorkshire Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

Chief Superintendent Ian Whitehouse, divisional commander of North West Leeds Division, paid tribute to the officer.

He said: "Any sudden death is tragic but particularly when it is one of our officers. I extend our sympathies to Simon's family, friends and work colleagues.

"I have spoken personally to officers who I know worked closely with Simon and we are offering support to any staff affected by his death."

According to reports, the officer was found hanged.

A police spokesman said the body was found at 1.15pm yesterday.

He said: "He was subject to an investigation by the professional standards department relating to fraud allegations."

The spokesman said the force had referred the death to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), but it has said it is a matter for West Yorkshire Police.
