The former England soccer star Paul Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm.

The ex-Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder was held in South Kensington, west London, in the early hours of this morning, sources said.

He was arrested after a 43-year-old man alleged that he had been assaulted at a nightclub in the area.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police were called at approximately 3.40am by a 43-year-old man who alleged that he had been assaulted by another man at a club in South Kensington.

"Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at 4.15am on suspicion of actual bodily harm and is currently in custody at a south west London police station."

It is not thought that the victim of the alleged assault required hospital treatment.

It is understood that the alleged incident took place outside Boujis nightclub in South Kensington, which is popular with celebrities.

The 43-year-old who made the claim of assault is thought to be a photographer.
