A young man who was stabbed to death at Hillingdon underground station was an aspiring athlete who had been travelling to an Arsenal match when he was attacked by two men.

Tashan Daniel had only just turned 20 when he became the capital’s 108th homicide victim on Tuesday.

He was attacked in broad daylight while waiting on the station platform with a friend, with the two due to watch Arsenal play Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup.

They were confronted by two other men who provoked a fight with the pair at around 4pm, during which one stabbed Mr Daniel in front of terrified passengersm, British Transport Police has said.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn described the victim as an “upstanding young man”.

He added: “He had only just celebrated his 20th birthday and was heading into London to watch Arsenal play.

"He did not deserve to lose his life during this senseless attack.

"His family are completely broken by this news and we are doing everything we can to offer them support."

Witnesses saw a man performing CPR on Mr Daniel as he lay bleeding on the station platform, which was quickly evacuated in the wake of the attack.

He was pronounced dead less than an hour later in a Tube carriage where he was receiving medical treatment.

The suspects fled the station and into a neighbouring street. A knife was recovered nearby.

Mr Blackburn added: "I am appealing for anyone with information to get in touch. We know both men fled the scene in the direction of Auriol Drive. I would ask anyone who saw anything suspicious to get in touch.

"Likewise, we'd be keen to speak with any motorist with dashcam footage from Auriol Drive or outside Hillingdon station at approximately 3.45pm to 4pm yesterday."

The 20-year-old was one of two knife crime related deaths to take place in the space of two hours in West London on Tuesday.

A second man, reportedly in his early 20s was stabbed to death in Ealing, just over 12 km away at around 8pm.

The Metropolitan Police were forced to implement Section 60 stop-and-search powers overnight across an area that spanned both alleged attacks in a bid to stem the tide of violence.
