Essex Police will this week send a case file to prosecutors in the case against the Energy Secretary, Chris Huhne, over allegations that he persuaded his estranged wife, Vicky Pryce, to accept three penalty points for speeding on his behalf.

She made the claims in The Sunday Times but The Independent on Sunday understands that when asked about them by officers on Tuesday, she declined to support the allegations. Police are waiting to see whether any new evidence emerges this weekend before compiling a file for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Mr Huhne, who left Ms Pryce for his aide Carina Trimingham last year, denies the allegations.
