A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of preparing to travel to Syria to join Isis.

The suspect was detained at an address in the Handsworth area on Tuesday by members of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are this morning continuing to carry out searches at the address.

"The arrest was pre-planned and intelligence-led. There was no immediate threat to public safety."

The man was held at the unnamed address, which is not his home, on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
