A man has been jailed for a string of sex offences against teenage girls after police found him alone in a hotel room with a 14-year-old.

An investigation found Jordan Scarrott, 20, had communicated with children over social media and engaged in sexual activity with some over the course of half a year.

Scarrott, from Rochdale, pleaded guilty to sex offences with children and was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison.

Detective Chief Inspector Philip Key, from Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Sunrise team, said: “Scarrott is a paedophile.

“Despite being aware that his victims were underage, he contacted them with a view to grooming them to meet and engage in sexual activity with him.”

Police were called by someone concerned for the welfare of a 14-year-old girl in a hotel room in Wales in September 2018.

Officers found the teenager alone with Scarrott, who initially claimed he was 15 years old.

Further enquiries established that Scarrott was, in fact, five years older, and an investigation was launched.

Police discovered that the 20-year-old had contacted girls from Wales, Greater Manchester and Northamptonshire over a social media app over a period of six months.

In some cases, Scarrott arranged to meet the girls and engaged in sexual activity with them.

Scarrot pleaded guilty to charges of four counts of sexual communication with a child, sexual grooming of a child and sexual activity with a child aged between 13 and 15.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to meet a child under the age of 16 following grooming and one count of inciting a child aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

He was sentenced on 28 February at Minshull Street Crown Court.

DCI Key said: “I hope Scarrott’s sentence acts as a warning to offenders that Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate grooming and that specialist officers conduct thorough investigations which bring perpetrators of child sexual abuse to face the justice system.”

He said: “I am thankful to the victims for co-operating with the police investigation and assisting with officers’ enquiries – without them, we wouldn’t be here today.”
