A man sought by police in connection with the killings of a mother and daughter has been spotted in France.

Angela Holgate, 54, who worked as an Avon lady, and her mother, Alice Huyton, 75, were found by a relative at Ms Holgate's home near Southport, Merseyside, on Saturday. A post-mortem examination confirmed the women were asphyxiated.

Police said yesterday that Ms Holgate's 51-year-old lodger, Barry Morrow, was seen in Calais that same evening after apparently driving there in Ms Holgate's white Citroen.

It is thought he may be travelling to Spain.

Police sources confirmed that he was "known to the police" and it is understood that Mr Morrow pleaded guilty last year to assaulting a Southport woman. The victim was not Ms Holgate or her mother.

Ms Huyton was last seen on Friday evening when she left her home in Southport to visit her daughter.
