Jody Morris was suspended by Leeds United yesterday following his arrest in connection with an alleged sexual assault.

Morris, the 24-year-old midfielder who moved to Leeds from Chelsea during the summer, was detained for questioning on Tuesday over the alleged assault on a 20-year-old woman in the early hours of the same day. He was held in custody for most of Wednesday before being released on bail pending further investigation.

"Leeds United AFC have had a meeting with Jody Morris and his solicitor this morning," a club statement said. "In accordance with the standard provisions of the players' contract of employment he has been suspended for up to 14 days to enable the club to conduct an internal investigation."

A second man, who is not believed to be a player, was also held and released on bail. At least one other Leeds player was questioned by police but not arrested.

The Leeds case comes as police in London investigate allegations that a 17-year-old girl was raped by a group of men, including several Premiership players, at a hotel two weeks ago.

The alleged assault in Leeds took place after 1.00am on Tuesday at a roadside rest area. Police have appealed for a potential witness to come forward. A taxi driver drove past the scene of the alleged attack and could provide information, West Yorkshire Police said.
