Police have charged a man with attempted murder after four children involved in a car crash were found to have injuries "not consistent with the collision".

Owen Peter Scott was charged with four counts of attempted murder and dangerous driving after crashing his car into a pub wall in Barnsley, South Yorkshire Police said.

The 29-year-old was arrested at the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Scott, of Heather Road, Hampshire, had been travelling along the A629 with the children when the car left the road and collided with the Travellers Inn on Copster Lane.

Two girls, aged seven and eight, and two boys, aged nine months and 21 months, were in the car at the time of the collision.

All four were taken to hospital, where they remain in a serious condition, according to police.

"Scott has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in relation to injuries sustained by the four children which are not all thought to be consistent with the collision," a South Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

“Following his appearance at Sheffield Magistrates' Court this morning, Saturday 26 August, Owen Scott has been remanded into custody.”
