A 73-year-old man is due to appear in court after the body of his 95-year-old mother was discovered at her home in Staffordshire.

David Powell has been charged with murder after detectives investigated the death of a woman in her home in Doncaster Lane, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent.

Although the body has yet to be formally identified local police officers believe it to be Cecilia Powell. A post-mortem is scheduled for this morning.

Mr Powell, who was arrested after police were called to his home on Thursday night, is due to appear before magistrates at Newcastle-under-Lyme this morning.

Detective Inspector Andy Maxfield from Staffordshire said: "At this stage of the investigation we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

Family liaison officers are working to support family members affected by the death.
