The death of a man who was found injured by a security guard at a shopping centre is being treated as suspicious, detectives said today.

The man, whose age has not yet been released, died in Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital after suffering serious head and facial injuries in an incident in Chelmsley Wood, West Midlands, last night.

A police spokesman said the casualty was found collapsed outside a Specsavers store, near Chelmsley Circle, at around midnight.

"The Ambulance Service attended and the man was taken to Heartlands Hospital, where he died of his injuries," the spokesman added.

Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre has been closed while police conduct inquiries at the scene and officers are also seeking to trace a man who contacted security staff at the location last night.

Anyone with information to assist the police inquiry is urged to contact detectives based at Chelmsley Wood police station on 0121 712 6199.
