Man in court over shop murder

A man was remanded in custody today when he appeared in court charged with the murder of a convenience store worker who was killed as he closed up, a court spokeswoman said.

Ahmet Paytak, 50, was shot in the abdomen after a man burst into the Euro Wine and Food Store in Holloway, north London, and opened fire on March 22 last year.

Mr Paytak, a father of three who worked part-time at the shop which is owned by a family member, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His son Huseyin, then 21, who was helping his father to close up, was shot in the leg and required hospital treatment.

Michael James, 30, of Ursula Mews, Hackney, north London, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent.

The case was sent to the Old Bailey but no date was set for James's next appearance.

Scotland Yard said a 24-year-old man arrested during the investigation is on police bail and is due to report back in May.
