Man killed by car after gang row

A man who was mown down by a car shortly after he was involved in a confrontation with a gang was named by police today.

Father-of-five Francis Molyneux was struck by a Land Rover in Holt Road, Liverpool, on Thursday night.

He died the next day, just hours before his 33rd birthday on Saturday.

Four men, aged between 19 and 28, who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Keelan, of Merseyside Police, said: "We are continuing to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed an earlier incident between the victim and two young men.

"Mr Molyneux was well-known and well-liked in the community and we are determined to bring those responsible for his tragic death to justice."

Detectives believe he was involved in an argument with a gang of youths at the corner of Holt Road and Ling Street some time between 7pm and 9pm on Thursday.

At around 10pm police said he was run over by a dark Land Rover Discovery.

Birthday cards and balloons have been placed at the spot where Mr Molyneux was knocked down.
