Police have released CCTV footage of a man smashing the front window of a prospective Labour MP's constituency office in Sunderland.

Julie Elliott‘s office was attacked around 11.10pm on Saturday 9 November.

Northumbria Police said the suspect damaged the window and was acting aggressively before leaving the area.

They launched an investigation and have no released CCTV showing a suspect moments before the attack.

“I know from the hundreds of messages of support I’ve received that this attack has shocked the vast majority of people in Sunderland, whatever their politics,” Ms Elliott said in a Facebook post. “There is no place for this behaviour in our great city.”

Detectives have asked the public to help identify the suspect.

“Intentional acts of criminal damage are totally unacceptable and we are committed to taking robust action against anybody found responsible,” said Detective Constable Paul Burrows, of Northumbria Police.

“Enquiries are ongoing into this incident, and while nobody was hurt, we are taking it incredibly seriously.

“We are now asking members of the public to look at the individual pictured and come forward if they recognise him – he could have valuable information that can assist with the investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 1195 091119 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
