A man has been stabbed to death and another victim is in a critical condition in hospital after a fight, police said yesterday.

The victim, believed to be in his early 20s, suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called around 6am today to reports of men fighting in Birchfields Road, Rusholme, Manchester.

A second victim, also thought to be in his 20s, has been taken to hospital with stab wounds and is in a critical condition.

Superintendent John Graves from Greater Manchester Police said: "This was clearly a very violent assault on the two victims. Sadly one man has died and another is seriously injured.

"At this stage it is too early to speculate on a motive, but we have dedicated team of detectives already following up a number of leads.

"It is unclear exactly how many men have been involved and I would encourage anyone that may have witnessed the incident or who knows who is responsible to call me.

"Perhaps you were with the men but not involved in this attack. I would urge you to address your conscience and call police.

"I would also like to reassure residents that incidents like this are, thankfully, rare, but we have a number of extra officers patrolling the area."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Greater Manchester Police.
