Police investigating two deaths at a hotel in Manchester have said they believe one of the victims was murdered.

The man was found dead in a room at the Britannia hotel after a second man plunged to his death from the fifth floor of the city-centre building.

Both were aged in their 20s, Greater Manchester Police said.

Officers were called to reports that a man had fallen from the building, in Portland Street, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his death is not being treated as suspicious. Witnesses said there was glass on the road where he fell.

Police gained entry to a room on the first floor of the hotel and found the other man’s body.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation but are not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted this week.

Detective Inspector Andy Butterworth, of the force’s major incident team, said: “This is a complex incident that has sadly led to the death of two men. My thoughts and sympathies are with the friends and family of the men. Although the investigation remains in its early stages and we are keeping an open mind into the full circumstances, we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“I would appeal to anyone who might have seen something, or those with information that might help this investigation, to please get in touch with police.”
