Documents giving details of the safe house Maxine Carr that was due to move to on her release from prison were stolen from a car in north London on Tuesday.

The documents were taken from a senior Home Office civil servant's vehicle and later dumped, it emerged yesterday.

The theft was a blow to the carefully crafted Home Office plan to give Carr a new life after her release from jail. The documents included the address and phone number of the house Carr was due to move into with her mother at the end of this week, it was reported last night.

Initial reports suggested the documents stolen from a Ford Fiesta in Hampstead, north-west London, might have included details of the new name Carr was to live under. But a Home Office spokeswoman said last night: "In terms of her new identity we can confirm no such documents were among the items stolen."

The Home Office confirmed that Carr was moved yesterday from Foston Hall Prison near Derby to an undisclosed location in preparation for her release on Friday.
