Morocco refuses to extradite £53m robbery suspect

A bid to extradite a suspect from Morocco in connection with Britain's biggest cash robbery has failed, police said today.

Lee Murray, 29, was arrested in Morocco in June 2006, four months after the £53 million raid on the Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent.

A court in Morocco ruled yesterday that Murray, formerly of Sidcup, Kent, was of Moroccan nationality and would therefore not be extradited.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "At a hearing on June 24, Lee Murray was deemed to be Moroccan and therefore cannot be extradited to this country.

"As planned, Kent Police is now working with the Moroccan police with this inquiry."

Five other men were convicted at the Old Bailey in January last year in connection with the robbery plot following a seven-month trial.

Stuart Royle, Jetmir Bucpapa, Lea Rusha and Roger Coutts were given indeterminate sentences and ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years.

Emir Hysenaj was given a 20-year sentence.
