New arrest over Croydon man's shooting death during riots

A new arrest has been made in connection with the death of a father-of-four who was shot during last year's riots, Scotland Yard said today.

Detectives detained a 32-year-old man in Croydon, south London, on suspicion of the murder of Trevor Ellis on August 8.

The 26-year-old was shot in the head after a car chase as looters ran riot through Croydon.

He went to the town with friends and they got involved in a disagreement with a group of around nine people, police said.

A car chase ensued and Mr Ellis, from Brixton Hill, south London, was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a vehicle in Duppas Hill Road at its junction with Warrington Road.

He was later pronounced dead at St George's Hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Le Pere said: "I believe his killers were actively involved in looting and responsible for robbing at least two people that night. They thought nothing of arming themselves with a gun and ultimately taking a young man's life, leaving four young children without a father."

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward, including anyone who saw the chase that involved a dark estate car, a silver hatchback and a dark hatchback.

Nine other men have already been arrested in connection with the death and are due to answer police bail in August.
