Murder inquiry launched after man gunned down near Wolverhampton hospital

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was gunned down near a hospital in Wolverhampton.

The victim was driven to the emergency department of New Cross Hospital following the attack shortly after 9pm on Friday.

He died in the early hours of Saturday morning but has not yet been formally identified.

Officers set up cordons around a damaged blue Peugeot car in the hospital car park following the incident.

Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust confirmed that no gun shots were fired at the hospital.

“At approx. 9.30pm tonight a man was brought in to the Emergency Department at New Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound," said a spokesperson for the Trust.

“The hospital is functioning as normal."

Photos on social media showed a heavy police presence around the hospital.

West Midlands Police said gunshots were heard at around 9.10pm in Valley Road, around 500 metres away.

"The investigation is in its early stages and officers are carrying out house-to-house enquiries," said a police spokesperson.
